Flying Fish Grill
The restaurant, located down a few steps
off Mission at the side entrance to Carmel Plaza, is small, intimate
and redolent with mouth-watering aromas.
There's a Japanese feel to the decor,
but there's also a coziness you don't find in that country's
traditionally minimalist interiors. Whimsical flying fish in
vivid colors, created by Kenny Fukumoto in papier-mache, float
from the ceiling, with batik paintings and other artwork by local
artists adding to the visual pleasure.
Upon entering, you may be greeted by
Kenny's wife, Tina, or by Kenny himself, who seems to spend as
much time checking on the satisfaction of his guests as he does
in the kitchen.
Many of these patrons have been regulars
since the 1970s to mid-1980s when Kenny and Tina owned another
highly successful restaurant in the same location called Shabu
Shabu.
At Flying Fish Grill, the vibes are
about family, loyalty, conviviality and loving what you do. What
you get is a feel-good restaurant where delicious food is only
one of the attractions.
